Choosing a USB cable or charger

Start with your device and both connections

Write down the exact model of your phone, tablet or laptop. Then check the connection on the device and the connection on the charger or computer. A cable needs the appropriate connector at each end.

Use the manufacturer’s manual or model specifications alongside the product description. A brand name alone is not enough to confirm compatibility. If you are replacing a cable, a photo can help you compare its shape, but keep the model details to hand too.

Separate charging, data and video

Decide what you need the cable to do: charge a device, transfer files or connect a screen. USB-C describes a connector; its shape alone does not confirm data speed or video support.

For charging, check the manufacturer’s requirements, including USB Power Delivery (USB PD) where specified. Compare the documented capabilities of the device, cable and charger together. A higher maximum wattage is not a promise of faster charging for your device. If a required feature is missing from the description, clarify it before ordering.

Check the everyday details

Measure the distance from the socket or computer to where you use your device, allowing some slack. Check that the charger’s mains plug is suitable for the country where you will use it.

Read the package contents carefully: is the cable included, the charger included, or are they sold separately? Product photos do not settle that question.
