AirPods are powered by Apple's new H1 chip and are equipped with optical sensors and motion accelerometers that detect when you have them in your ears. Whether you use both AirPods or just one, the H1 chip automatically redirects the sound and activates the microphone. When you talk on the phone, or with Siri, a voice accelerometer works together with beam-forming microphones to filter out background noise and focus on your voice.
